Preparation for Transport

  • Ensure adequate analgesia, comfort and support to patient and family, allowing parental presence if possible
  • Establish and firmly secure at least 2 separate intravenous access routes. Extremity splints may be used to prevent accidental dislodgment
  • Place maintenance fluid and other infusions (sedatives, inotropes) on volumeteric pumps. Label all syringes and the lines. Ensure tight luer-lock connections and keep the site of IV line visible to enable prompt diagnosis of extravasation.
  • Explore with transport personnel if parent can ride along
