RSI is the most common technique for securing the airway with an endotracheal tube in emergent conditions.
It involves
- drug-induced loss of consciousness and muscle tone
- cricoid pressure to reduce regurgitation of stomach contents may be applied
- no bag mask ventilation
- intubation
The aim is to intubate the trachea as quickly as possible and minimise the risk of aspiration in doing so.
It should be undertaken only by suitably trained and experienced personnel (e.g., anesthesiologist, emergency physician, or ALS-trained paramedic). Preparation is key and all necessary equipment and resuscitation drugs are immediately to hand.
