IO Access - Complications

  • Extravasation of fluids into soft tissues (avoided by aspiration of blood / marrow through the IO needle)
  • Avoid multiple attempts in one bone - if the posterior cortex is pierced by a previous attempt, extravasation from the puncture hole can result, despite correct IO placement at a later attempt
  • Infection, cellulitis, osteomyelitis are possible, but uncommon complications, particularly with temporary use
