Classification of Head Injury (HI) by GCS

• GCS 14-15 -> Mild HI
• GCS 9-13 -> Moderate HI
• GCS < 9 -> Severe HI

• Mild HI - Observe, plain films, head CT scan (typically good prognosis)
• Moderate HI - Observe, CT scan, ICP monitoring (goal to prevent secondary brain injury)
• Severe HI - CT scan, treat increased ICP, surgery (goal to prevent secondary brain injury, neurological outcome likely to be poor)
