Intracranial Pressure - Physiology

  • The skull is a rigid closed box containing brain, cerebrospinal fluid (CSF), and blood
  • An increase in the volume of any of these can cause:
    1. A decrease in the volume of one or both of the two components or
    2. An increase in the pressure inside the skull (ICP)
  • Implication: A small amount of swelling or hematoma in the brain can cause a significant increase in ICP
  • Normal ICP is 5-10 mm Hg
