Secondary Survey

Secondary survey involves:

  • A trauma specific history - use the AMPLE mnemonic to recall the components of focused history
  • A detailed head-to-toe examination for injuries
  • Log roll child from side-to-side to examine the back for injuries and deformities when caring for patients with potential spinal injuries
  • Laboratory studies include HCT, electrolytes, renal function (e.g., creatinine), coagulation studies and request for type and crossmatch, if clinically relevant
  • Radiographic evaluation of cervical spine, chest, pelvis in most cases; ultrasound / CT studies if clinically indicated
