- Congenital craniofacial abnormalities
- Congenital cervical spine instability
- Obesity
- Facial burns, inhalation injury and airway edema
- Facial trauma
- Suspected cervical spine injury
- Foreign body, blood or vomitus in the airway
- External airway compression from expanding hematoma
