Management of Inhalation Injury

  • Primary Survey and Secondary Survey (as for trauma)
  • Singed eyebrows or hair, soot in the nose or mouth, carbonaceous sputum, hoarseness, & stridor are signs of smoke inhalation injury → anticipate airway swelling
  • Early tracheal intubation by experienced staff (rapid airway swelling may make later intubation extremely difficult)
  • Carboxyhemoglobin levels to assess for carbon monoxide poisoning
  • Administer supplemental oxygen
