Management of Inhalation Injury
Primary Survey and Secondary Survey (as for trauma)
Singed eyebrows or hair, soot in the nose or mouth, carbonaceous sputum, hoarseness, & stridor are signs of smoke inhalation injury → anticipate airway swelling
Early tracheal intubation by experienced staff (rapid airway swelling may make later intubation extremely difficult)
Carboxyhemoglobin levels to assess for carbon monoxide poisoning
Administer supplemental oxygen
