Burns: injury depth and extent

  • The younger the child, the thinner their skin and the larger body surface area/weight ratio, and the more limited physiologic reserves
  • The degrees of burn depth are: 1st (preserved epidermis), 2nd (into dermis), 3rd (through dermis)
  • Burn extent or burn total body surface area (TBSA) is the sum of 2nd and 3rd degree areas
  • The child’s palm and fingers equals 1% of their TBSA
