Communication Pearls for Children

• Talk "to the child" rather than talking "over the child"
• Include the child in the discussion of his / her care
• Present information on the child's level, give examples
• Listen to questions and ask the child to repeat the information given, to help prevent misconceptions
• Autonomy and independence of adolescents should be respected by giving them an opportunity to ask questions in the absence of parents / guardians
