  • Act calm & reassuring
  • Convey concern for their welfare
  • Ask who is who (determine family hierarchy)
  • Don't "discount" patient / family concerns
  • Listen & acknowledge what you hear (i.e., let them talk)
  • Look directly at patients / family & call by name
  • Be honest & proactive in sharing information
  • Provide privacy
  • Use therapeutic touch when appropriate
  • Tolerate silence
