Nasopharyngeal Airway Insertion

  • Choose an airway roughly the same diameter as patient's little finger
  • Insertion depth (airway length) should be from nose to the tragus of the ear
  • Use a water-soluble lubricant
  • Insert with the bevel facing the nasal septum
  • Direct the airway straight back along the floor of the nasal passage (not upward)
  • Suction as necessary
  • Administer O2 as necessary
  • Contraindicated in suspected base of skull fractures
