Sedation: Preparation

  1. Consider using a standardized pre-sedation checklist
  2. Self-inflating bag mask connected to full oxygen supply and available; apply supplemental O2 via NC or face mask if patient tolerates
  3. Suction connected and turned on to full vacuum
  4. Monitors: ECG, BP, and SpO2; EtCO2. Reference normal vital signs for patient’s age group.
  5. Age/ size appropriate advanced airway equipment available
  6. Establish appropriate vascular access if indicated
  7. Sedation medications drawn up and labelled in appropriately sized syringes; PALS emergency and reversal medications available
