Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome (ARDS)

  • ARDS is a clinical syndrome resulting in respiratory failure and severe hypoxemia
  • May be seen after trauma, particularly:
    • multiple trauma (abdomen, head, chest, bone)
    • massive blood transfusion
    • lung contusion
    • aspiration of stomach contents
  • Onset variable (hours-days after injury)
  • Mortality is high (>40%)
  • Treatment is supportive (lung-protective ventilation)
