Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome (ARDS)

ARDS is a clinical syndrome resulting in respiratory failure and severe hypoxemia
May be seen after trauma, particularly:
- multiple trauma (abdomen, head, chest, bone)
- massive blood transfusion
- lung contusion
- aspiration of stomach contents
Onset variable (hours-days after injury)
Mortality is high (>40%)
Treatment is supportive (lung-protective ventilation)
