Prevention/Treatment of Hypothermia

  • Remove all wet garments
  • Minimize exposure during clinical examination
  • Use blankets and head coverings during transport
  • Monitor core temperature (rectal, esophageal, Foley)
  • Warm ambient temperature (75o - 800o F)
  • Warm all IV fluids and blood products
  • Forced air heating (Bair Hugger®)
  • Use radiant warmer for infants and small children
  • Heat and humidify supplemental oxygen
