Thermal Injuries - Flames and Scalds

• Burn injuries are #2 cause of death in children over 1 year of age (motor vehicle crashes are #1)
• Flame & scald burns account for most pediatric burns
• Burn injured children may have associated injuries - assess for smoke inhalation injury or other trauma
• Early fluid resuscitation is key to successful outcome
• Be aware of non-accidental pediatric burn injuries for potential Child Protective Services (CPS) referral
