A 7-Module Course Designed for Providers of Early Care to Injured Children
Module 6: Pediatric Trauma Analgesia and Sedation
of 18
Regional Analgesia: Peripheral Nerve Blocks
Commonly used for appendicular injuries (limb fractures, limb amputations, reductions of subluxations, and burns)
Benefits: acute analgesia and minimization of systemic analgesic side effects, such as respiratory depression with opioids
Risks: infection, nerve injury, surrounding structure injury (ex. pneumothorax during brachial plexus blocks), intravascular injection, local anesthetic systemic toxicity, controversial use in patients at risk of compartment syndrome
