- ARDS is a clinical syndrome resulting in respiratory failure and severe hypoxemia
- May be seen after trauma, particularly:
- multiple trauma (abdomen, head, chest, bone)
- massive blood transfusion
- lung contusion
- aspiration of stomach contents
- Onset variable (hours-days after injury)
- Mortality is high (>40%)
- Treatment is supportive (lung-protective ventilation)
