Thermal Burns

  • Compared to older children, young children have high surface-area-to-volume ratios, thin skin, and limited physiologic reserves → greater morbidity and mortality
  • Burn severity is determined by its size (% Body Surface Area [BSA]) & depth (partial or full thickness)
  • Burns are extremely painful and adequate analgesia must be provided as soon as possible
